(World History : Grand Narrative) 1 Vol. Astle, Thomas. The Origin and Process of Writing. London: By T. Bensley for J. White, 1803. Folio, large-paper copy with full margins, untrimmed. 18 3/4" x 12"; 485mm x 350mm. [7], xxiv, 240. With engraved portrait frontispiece and [32] epigraphic and manuscript-facsimile engraved plates, 9 of which in full or partial hand-color, and numbered but that incorrectly (with plate 15 misidentified as a second plate 14). 20th-century half-binding in fleshtone pleather and brown buckram, horrendously garrish but perhaps endearing to some (after the manner of a 70's Cadillac); some scuffing but generally sound and certainly functional. Text internally clean and bright, colored plates very bright and easy on the eye; some offsetting opposite plates, however, and some conspicuous foxing to frontis recto/verso. Early minor repairs to ffep and frontis at lower margin, not affecting plate in the case of the latter. Lacks any final endpaper which has left final leaf verso browned owing to exposure thereunto. Much fuller margins than even most l.p. copies, but some edges are rather brittle: caveat emptor.
