The painting is actively flaking and has suffered paint loss. The uppermost paint layers are cleaving off of the underlying paint layers and the extent of these widespread areas of loss indicates generally poor adhesion between the paint layers. Where losses have occurred the underlying paint layer can be seen to be pigmented area by area. These underlying colors are somewhat related to the composition and may be the artist's initial applications for the composition, or the beginnings of a former abandoned composition. Since they lack specificity their presence does not suggest a completed secondary painting beneath. The surface of the painting is covered with a substantial layer of grime and discolored varnish.
