note:
Freeman's is pleased to offer the following work, and two subsequent works (Lots 158 and 159) by James Ensor in this auction. These works have descended in the family from patriarch Albert Croquez, a venerable lawyer, historian, writer and art connoisseur. Albert was an accomplished figure, who, in addition to having a successful law career, wrote extensively on French history and was the recipient of awards from institutions including the Académie Française. Amongst his closest friends were Félix Labisse, Moïse Kisling, and James Ensor. An active collector of Ensor's work, Albert Croquez authored the first monograph on Ensor as a printmaker. His fine, discerning eye for art led Croquez to build an extensive and important collection, and we are honored to present a part of that legacy.
