A Palmyran Limestone Relief of a Woman

Circa 2nd Century A.D.

Height 19 7/8 inches (50.5 cm).

Provenance:

Sotheby's New York, Antiquities and Islamic Art, 8 December 2000, Lot 162.

Note:

This relief depicts a draped female holding votives in both hands, and adorned with a veil and ornate diadem. Typically, these sculptures were used as funerary monuments and represented the deceased. A inscription can been seen to the right of her head. Most likely this short text was used to identify the draped female who would have been buried with many others in a communal tomb.

Repaired from 4 or 5 large fragments, with a large fracture visible across the bottom of her clothing and tops of her feet, and other fractures barely visible across her shoulders, her midsection and across her knees. Encrustations on the side of her face, front of her figure and the proper left side of the back of the relief. Traces of pigment visible in the inscription. A few surface chips and abrasions as is typical. Affixed to a modern stone base.

Mr. Coley joined the Antiquities department in 2021 after working as Managing Director in the Ancient Art department at Colnaghi, the world’s oldest commercial art gallery, where he helped to establish the Ancient Art department and launched Colnaghi New York in 2017. Prior to Colnaghi, Mr. Coley was in the Greek and Roman Art department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Coley holds a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.A. in Art Market from the Fashion Institute of Technology, and he earned an art-appraisal certificate from New York University.
