The Florida-born artist, lives outside of Tallahassee, Florida, surrounded by found objects, such as doors, buttons, bottle caps, costume jewelry and other objects that she uses to create her art. Driven by a powerful vision and her strong Christian faith, Proctor started creating her now-famous art in 1995.
As she recounts in an interview in the Outsider Art magazine Raw Vision, after 30 days of fasting and praying she had a vision of blinding light that told her to go get a door, some paint and a brush.
I went and got the door and the paint and didn't know what to do, and the voice told me to paint a lady. [...] The Lord gave me a vision to paint doors, and I'd never painted anything before. (Steve Kistulentz, Mary Proctor's Vision, Raw Vision, London, Winter 1999-2000, pp. 32-37)
The panel is somewhat distressed and with surface dirt, as intended by the artist.
