Pair of Regency mahogany and marquetry side chairs 19th century

Crestrail with marquetry tablet of Classical devices over three carved and reeded spindles, marquetry inlaid backrest on overupholstered seat and squared tapering inlaid legs ending in spade feet.

Provenance: Estate of Mr. and Mrs. William R. Wister, Oldwick, New Jersey.

Descended in the Wister family to the present owners. The chairs are thought to have been part of the furnishings of the Wister family ancestral home, Grumblethorpe, in Germantown, Philadelphia, now a National Historic Landmark.
