59 1/2 in. x 47 1/4 in. (sight)George W. Pettit hailed from England but resided in Philadelphia, where he exhibited his work at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts between 1862 and 1887. Known for his portraits and figure studies, he also exhibited at the Art Club of Philadelphia and at the National Academy of Design. Today, one of his prominent works is on exhibition and in the permanent collection of the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas.
Provenance: Plaque affixed to frame, "Hamlet and Opehlia by George Pettit. Presented to the City of Philadelphia by the Fairmount Park Art Association 1894."
