H: 34 in.A chair from this set appears in a photograph captioned, "Interior of the studio at Aldie," published in House and Garden, volume 4, 1903, p. 178.
An example of the A.W. Pugin's oak 'Glastonbury' chair on which this set is based is in the collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum, CIRC.352.1961.
Provenance: William R. Mercer, Jr. (1858-1939) used these chairs in his studio from about 1895 to 1927. The younger brother of Henry Chapman Mercer (1856-1930) of Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, Fonthill and the Mercer Museum, William Mercer was also an artist and sculptor. He built a studio for his cement casting behind the Doylestown family home "Aldie" in 1892. The studio was demolished when Mercer and his wife, Martha Dana Mercer, built the present Aldie mansion in 1927.
