A prominent lawyer and writer on the law, history and literature, Brewster was elected Philadelphia City Solicitor in 1862 and elected Judge of Court of Common Pleas in 1866. He served a term as Attorney General for the State of Pennsylvania.

The first portrait presented by Gustavus Romak and other members of the Bar in 1868; the second presented by the Hon. John M. Patterson, on January 9, 1912.
