Provenance:

A gift from the above.
Collection of Jack and Annie Mary Webb.

Lot Note:
Robert Ruark, an internationally known writer and novelist often referred to as “the poor man’s Hemingway,” likely collected the present painting on the advice of his friend Truman Capote. The American writer had discovered the work of Hector Hyppolite in the mid-1940s during a stay in Haiti, admiring the artist's ability to channel "his country’s spiritual history" on canvas (Congdon, 2002, p.109).
In overall very good condition. There is light wear to the edges of the board, presumably from contact with the frame, as well as softening at all four corners. With some craquelure in the darker brown areas, as well as a few small areas of surface loss. Additional images available upon request.
