This 1945 Associated Press shows a passing of the guard in the National League as bespectacled Honus Wagner measures the tools of the trade with New York Giants slugger Mel Ott. Ott was on the edge of passing Wagner's record for career total bases when he met with legendary Pirates shortstop turned coach. The original caption adhered to the reverse of photo reads "Mel Ott (right) of the New York Giants, will set a new National League for bases hit when he exceeds the total of 4,888 established in 1917 by Honus Wagner, (left) now a Pirate coach, photographed at Giant-Pirate game in Pittsburgh, May 26.
