Standing Female Figure is one of the small sculptures produced from molds made by Elie Nadelman by Inwood Pottery a major ceramics studio located in Uptown Manhattan founded in 1923 by H. Aimee LePrince Voorhees (1874 – 1951), a member of a prominent family of ceramists. Nadelman worked on commissions and projects with Aimee Voorhees and Inwood Pottery

which was located not far from his Riverdale, NY residence. In a 1948 letter to Lincoln Kirstein Aimee Voorhees expressed her admiration for the sculptor in the following: “His power, simplicity, elusive rhythm to make clay come alive ...is grand.”

The figure’s gesture is related to popular entertainment of the period. The chorus takes a similar pose in this scene from the 1942 Broadway musical “Wine, Women and Song.”
