Judith Schaechter is renowned for transforming the ancient medium of stained glass into a provocative and emotionally charged contemporary art form. Her work blends meticulous craftsmanship with haunting, often unsettling imagery, confronting themes of pain, beauty, and the human condition.
In Skinning the Cat, Schaechter applies her signature techniques of layering, engraving, and painting on flash glass to create a visceral composition. Rendered in searing tones of orange, red, and brown, the hands and the cat appear both fragmented and exposed, held together by bold lead lines that echo anatomical diagrams or medieval martyrdoms. Lit from behind, the panel glows with an intensity that contrasts with the rawness of its subject, inviting viewers into a luminous yet deeply unsettling psychological space.

The stained glass is in overall very good condition. The lighter colored pane at left center has a crack in the glass, approx. 1 in. long. There is some slight dust accumulation throughout. The lightbox has some wear to the edges and corners, notably at center left there is some paint loss in an area approx. 2 in. long. The piece illuminates when plugged in.
