Lot Essay:
Claude Renoir, affectionately known as Coco throughout his life, was born in 1901 when his father, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, was already 60 years old. The arrival of this golden-haired child brought a breath of fresh air into the aging artist’s daily life.
Cheerful and full of energy, Coco quickly became one of Renoir's favorite models, dressed in various costumes, captured in countless poses, and forever remembered on canvas, or as exemplified here, in sculpture.
The present work reflects the shared passion for craftsmanship that united Coco and his father, who taught the art of ceramics to his three sons in 1915, following his wife's passing.
