Lot Note:
The motif of the felled tree—suggestive of a human form here—originated in the early 1940s, when Vaughan created numerous studies for a symbolic composition memorializing the fallen youth of the war. During his service with the non-combatant corps, clearing the grounds of The Ashton Gifford House (see Lot 9), he was unable to work on canvas and instead turned to what he described as his “volatile” medium of ink, gouache, and wax crayon. As exemplified in the present work, Vaughan frequently applied the term Study to independent, finished works. In the present case, although the artist produced several similar studies titled Walled Garden, no ‘finished’ oil painting of that name appears to have been completed in 1946.

The work is in overall very good condition. The paper is lifting slightly from the mount at the top, left and right edges. It is adhered in a way that the verso is not accessible. The top left and bottom right corners have some very slight wear. Under UV light, a tiny area at bottom right fluoresces but it is unclear if this is pigment or a stain.
