We would like to thank Juan Fernández Lacomba for his assistance cataloging this lot and locating the scene, which depicts the left bank of the Guadalquivir River on the outskirts of Seville, near San Jerónimo.
Lot Note:
Andrew Cunningham Ware (1945–2024) was an avid scholar and amateur Egyptologist whose passion for the ancient world led him to study under the renowned French Egyptologist, Christiane Desroches Noblecourt. Splitting his time between France and South Florida, Ware assembled a diverse collection that reflected his wide-ranging intellectual interests, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to historical documents from the French and Russian Revolutions. His collection, rich with family heirlooms, also features pieces acquired through his travels and academic pursuits. Ware’s family background also adds depth to the collection. He was the great-grandson of Andrew Woodbury Preston, one of the founders of the United Fruit Company. This connection to the world of business subtly informs the collection, where objects of personal significance are intertwined with intellectual curiosity.
Framed: 20 1/4 x 26 3/4 in.
Moderate deposits of surface dirt and dust, primarily on the verso; several pinpoint paint losses within the center; some minor discoloration in scattered areas of the sky; otherwise appears in overall good and stable condition. Under UV light: pinpoint spots fluoresce throughout the sky and blue portions of water, but it is difficult to determine if these areas are inpainting or the ground coming through the paint layer; one small area of inpainting each to the extreme upper right and corners; instances of small scattered spots of inpainting through the middle ground; two small spots of inpainting in the lower left corner; an approximately 1/2 x 2 inch area of inpainting along the center right edge.
