In A Winter Panorama, Nunamaker exploits a horizontal canvas of 42 inches to emphasize the beauty–and sheer breadth–of Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He anchors the composition with the textural weight of a stone farmhouse at left, which serves as a foil to the snow-covered hills on the horizon. The near-monochromatic foreground trees stand starkly against a sky that is both heavily laden with leaden gray clouds and fractured by patches of vibrant cerulean. This light transforms the snow, which is rendered not in pure white, but with subtle gradations of blue, demonstrating Nunamaker's mastery of the optical effects of winter air and his sensitivity to a resonant regional realism that captures the occasionally severe, yet compelling beauty of the Bucks County landscape.
