Lot Note:
In Frog Hollow, Garber's characteristic delicate touch and carefully rendered dab-like brushwork is on full display, though largely in the upper portion of the painting. In the lower portion of the painting, he has instead opted to employ a looser, less tightly controlled approach, using long, single blue and pale-yellow brushstrokes in the foreground to depict the local autumnal ground cover. This square-sized composition employs the Pennsylvania Impressionist's characteristic brown, green, and blue tonalities–the latter most evident in parts of the stream and the gentleman's pants at left as he attends to a wood pile. Though Garber once described his landscapes as having "a mass of detail in the mass," the overall effect of the present work is one of a poetic quietude. Interestingly only one other painting of Frog Hollow has appeared at auction (Freeman's, Philadelphia, December 2002).
