Lot Note:
Garber painted landscapes almost exclusively throughout the 1930s and 40s. A unique example for the time period, the present lot was commissioned from Garber, together with a companion portrait of Mrs. Hervey Allen and their daughters. The works were executed at Bonfield, near Oxford, the family's estate on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. The sitter, Mr. Allen, was a successful author, best known for his novel Anthony Adverse, the film adaptation of which was the recipient of four Academy Awards in 1936.
The artist portrays Allen at work in his study, with his estate and the Choptank River, a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay, visible through the windows in the room. Garber's treatment of light and shadow serves to illuminate the interior, while reserving more muted light for Mr. Allen, evoking a mood of quiet contemplation. The artist seldom painted outside Pennsylvania, making the present example a rare example within his body of work.
