Lot Note:
Emma Fordyce MacRae’s artistic production was deeply rooted in Cape Ann, where she spent extended periods with her family in a home that became hers after her father’s death in 1925. Unlike many artists who flocked to Gloucester or Rockport seasonally, MacRae’s connection to the region stemmed from longstanding family ties, perhaps even predating her professional aspirations. Although she participated in the local art scene, frequently interacting with artists like Fern Coppedge, Cecilia Beaux, Theresa Bernstein, John Sloan, Max Kuehne, Harry Leith-Ross, and Antony Thieme, MacRae painted in relative solitude and gravitated toward subject matter that set her apart from her contemporaries.
