The Napier Company, originally called The E. A. Bliss Company, was founded in the last quarter of the 19th century in New England and produced first men's watch chains, and later a variety of decorative silver objects and jewelry. Following rapid grown in the first quarter of the 20th century, president James Napier traveled to Paris for the groundbreaking Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes in 1925. As a result, the company embraced partnerships with modern designers and European fashions.
The resulting emphasis on modern design led directly to the creation of this charming and whimsical cocktail shaker. Designed for the company by American designer Emile Arthur Schuelke (1901-1986), the penguin was originally launched for the Christmas season in 1936 and quickly became immensely popular. A special edition was re-released for the New York world's fair in 1939, ostensibly to complement the exhibit Admiral Byrd's Penguin Island, celebrating the popular Arctic and Antarctic explorer Rear Admiral Richard Byrd Jr. For an example at the Cooper Hewitt Museum in New York see Collection Record 1971-92-1a, b.
The form with some polish build-up in areas as well as some rubbing and losses to the silver-plating, most notably to the wings and handle as expected due to age and use. The lid with a few small dents. We have been unable to remove the lid from the body.
