Note:

Neal Dow, a devout Quaker born in Portland, Maine, was a prominent politician, serving as the mayor of Portland, and later in the Maine House of Representatives. He positioned much of his platform on prohibition, aiming to ban the sale and production of alcohol, and led the Maine Temperance Union in 1850. Following his time served in the Civil War, he continued to fight for prohibition, even being nominated for presidency in the 1880 convention under the Prohibitionist party.

This cup was presented to Dow by the Ladies Temperance of Portland in 1856.
