Born in Boston in 1928, Helen (Gay) Scott, nee Elliot, was a pianist, piano teacher, mother of three and grandmother of seven. She studied piano at the Longy School of Music, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and later at the Royal College of Music and Trinity College of Music, 1969-1973, while living in London where her husband was special assistant to Walter Annenberg, the American ambassador to the Court of St. James. Married for 42 years to Robert Montgomery Scott (1929-2005), President and CEO of the Philadelphia Museum of Art from 1982-1996, Helen served on the board of the Curtis Institute of Music, taught piano at the Settlement Music School, and privately into her nineties. She was an alumna of the Shady Hill School, the Foxcroft School and Radcliffe College.
refinished, but with a consistent surface; the crestrail with evidence of being reattached to stiles, with tenons evident and fill over tenons on sides- the left-facing attachment is slightly loose from stile, the tenon visible with no fill; the back of shoe with repaired break; the front corners of seat frame with mended breaks or cracks- with some fill evident, and the frame joints overall appear to have been tightened, including the through tenons to back of legs (with fill evident); the knee returns probably reattached, with some nail reinforcements visible; retaining old corner blocks to interior of seat frame, but with evidence of having additional blocks or supports, which have been removed (possibly later elements); the back legs both have added wood segments for height; back of left-facing leg with a small stabilized split along back edge near rear rail; front seal rail with incised Roman numeral "V", and the slip seat (which is period) is incised "XIII"; stable and sturdy
