Provenance:
The Old Print Shop, New York, New York, 2003.
Note:
A handsome example of English cartographer Aaron Arrowsmith's (1750-1823) monumental map of the United States. First published in 1796, this map was frequently updated by Arrowsmith to incorporate the latest towns, territories, and geographical discoveries, going through at least 13 issues up to 1819. Three issues with this 1802 imprint are noted by Stevens and Tree, this being the third, and with Arrowsmith's address given as "10 Soho Square", and with his title as "Hydrographer", which is noted by them as appearing ca. 1808 (although this copy is on watermarked paper dated 1811). Of this issue, they note, "Many new place names and rivers added." Also included for the first time is the identification of the Michigan and Ohio Territories.
