By descent in the family of lawyer and antiquarian Benjamin Ropes Nichols (1786-1848) and his wife, Mary Pickering (1793-1863), to the present owner.
Note:
Nichols was born in Salem to Captain Ichabod Nichols (1749-1839) and Lydia Ropes (1759-1835). He graduated from Harvard and resided in Salem until 1824, when he relocated to Boston. There, Nichols served as clerk to the Boston and Providence and Boston and Lowell Railroad corporations and was elected to the Massachusetts Historical Society in 1829.
