This striking poster by Paul Davis, created for The Normal Heart, represents a pivotal moment in Joel Grey’s theatrical career. Known for his bold, emotive style, Davis captures the urgency and gravity of Larry Kramer's groundbreaking play about the early days of the AIDS crisis. For Grey, who stepped into the demanding lead role of Ned Weeks, the artwork served as a powerful extension of the production itself. “I was always grateful for the art that was connected with whatever I was in,” he reflected.
Taking on the role of Ned Weeks was no small feat. “It was a bear of a part,” Grey admitted. His daughter, actress Jennifer Grey, recalled the significance of that decision—not only stepping into an emotionally charged role, but doing so at a time when portraying a gay man at the center of such a politically urgent story was an act of real courage. She described it as “incredibly powerful, timely, and important,” emphasizing how rare and brave it was for an actor of her father’s stature to take on such a role in that era.
The poster stands not only as a visual artifact but as a testament to Grey’s courage, the play’s impact, and the enduring connection between performance and advocacy.

Largely in very good condition. Paper is toned slightly with light and time. A few light creases present near bottom, above The Public Theater text, commensurate with gentle handling. Please note that all four corners are visible, so this work was not removed from its frame.
