the crest rail with carved scallop shell ends above a pierced vasiform splat, the apron with carved shell and foliate decoration on front surmounting cabriole forelegs decorated with foliate knees and ending in claw and ball feet.
Height 38 1/2 x width 22 3/4 x depth 23 inches.

A great pair of Irish chairs. The use of carved shells is very typical of Irish furniture of this period and the way that the design of the back provides logical spaces for these shells is very unusual. The cabriole legs are similarly carved and a good shape, the ball and claw feet being bold. It is unusual for the front seat rail to be carved and decorated also.

Feet reduced. Sun-faded, but without any other significant breaks or restorations. Structurally sound.

Nick Coombs is a senior specialist in the Furniture & Decorative Arts department and also the Coins, Medals & Banknotes department at Freeman's.
Prior to joining Freeman's in 2014, Mr. Coombs worked for PCGS Currency in Peoria, Illinois, where he was responsible for the grading and authentication of paper money. This enabled him to travel to dozens of coin and currency shows a year and develop a lifelong passion for numismatics. In addition to heading the Coins, Medals & Banknotes department at Freeman's, Mr. Coombs works closely with Furniture & Decorative Arts department and has directed auctions for philatelics, memorabilia, scientific instruments, and fountain pens. He received a BA in art history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a master of letters in art and art world practice from the University of Glasgow.
