(I have a feeling I have already written about this!!). Period jugs that are large enough to be used as table water jugs are rare, and are generally termed ‘beer jugs’, this example is very elegant and a very good weight. Hall marked by Peter and William Bateman, Peter being Hester’s son. Hester is remembered for being a pioneering female silversmith who continued her husband’s business when he died in 1760. Bateman family silver is highly collected.

Overall good and ready to place. An even network of light surface scratches consistent with age, use, and polishing. Some polish residue visible to the recesses. The body with a dent beneath the crest on the lower right and a small ding to the gadrooning near the base. A few other minute dings to the body which are visible only in raking light. One flat dent to the spout of the jug which is not immediately noticeable. Additional images are available upon request.

Nick Coombs is a senior specialist in the Furniture & Decorative Arts department and also the Coins, Medals & Banknotes department at Freeman's.
Prior to joining Freeman's in 2014, Mr. Coombs worked for PCGS Currency in Peoria, Illinois, where he was responsible for the grading and authentication of paper money. This enabled him to travel to dozens of coin and currency shows a year and develop a lifelong passion for numismatics. In addition to heading the Coins, Medals & Banknotes department at Freeman's, Mr. Coombs works closely with Furniture & Decorative Arts department and has directed auctions for philatelics, memorabilia, scientific instruments, and fountain pens. He received a BA in art history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a master of letters in art and art world practice from the University of Glasgow.
