Lot Essay:

Born in Salerno, Italy, in 1905, Salvatore Pinto immigrated to the United States with his family in 1909. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art (now the University of the Arts) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, working across painting, printmaking, photography, and design. Alongside his brothers Biago and Angelo, Pinto became a favored artist of Albert C. Barnes, who was a major patron and collector of his work. This connection later inspired Sidney Rothberg to take an interest in Pinto’s art and even meet him through several classes he attended at the Barnes Foundation.

Supported by several traveling scholarships, Pinto toured Europe, Corsica, and Africa, where he encountered the European avant-garde and studied under Henri Matisse in the South of France. Matisse’s radical use of color and Mediterranean imagery left a lasting impression on Pinto, evident in the numerous nudes, odalisques, and Orientalist themes found in the Sidney Rothberg Collection - works the artist completed upon his return to Philadelphia.

Framed: 31 x 27 x 3 in.

The unlined canvas is in good condition. There are scattered areas of abrasion and surface loss, for instance at top left, center left and bottom left, center right and bottom right, the largest of these areas is approx. 3/4 in. There are also some soft creases to the canvas, particularly at top right, an approx. 4 in. long arc of creasing. There are a few small spots of surface soiling in the figure's body.
