Lot Essay:
Hubert de Saint Senoch (1913–1983), the former owner of this work, was a close friend of Jean Cocteau and, through that connection, was introduced early on to Jean Hugo, who collaborated with Cocteau on the décors for Roméo et Juliette. Saint Senoch became an avid admirer of Hugo’s vision and collected nearly ten of his works over time. This rare view of Montmartre is a testament to both his discerning eye and the fertile creative ground associated with Montmartre - the artist’s neighborhood par excellence.
Framed: 10 x 8 x 1 in.
The work is in overall good condition. The paper is adhered to the mat at top and bottom with paper tape. There are old pieces of tape at edges. The paper is toned and is cut unevenly along the left edge. There are slight losses to the paper at the bottom two corners. The bottom left corner and right extreme edge both have minor losses to the pigment. The bottom left corner also shows a soft handling crease. There is minor staining at the top left in the building and in the sky to the right in this area. Additional images available upon request.
