Note:
The compsition of the portrait shares many similarities with the group portait of The Three Eldest Childern of Charles I by Sir Anthony van Dyck, executed between 1635-1636 and presently in the Royal Collection. Identified as Princess Mary in the group portrait, she occupies the far right of the painting and holds the same pose, dress, hair and jewelry as the figure in the present lot.
Provenance:
Possibly handled in a 1987 Christie's New York sale from the Birmingham Museum of Art and arrtibuted to the "Circle of van Dyck" and the American Art Association sale 1917 and described as "Perior of Kneller School".
Frame dimensions: 39 1/2 x width 30 1/2 inches.
Canvas is relined but appears in otherwise good, well-conserved condition. A few white scuffs to canvas above figure's arms. Examination under UV light shows overpainting to figure's left arm in the fabric area and within figure's hair. Additional images available upon request.
