Uncredited. 6 x 3 7/8 in. photograph on 10 1/2 x 7 3/4 in. paper mount with punch holes on left margin, indicating that the image was removed from an album or book. -- Outdoor view of Major George Gordon, 5th US Cavalry, posed near a tent with fellow officers. Uncredited. 6 1/2 x 8 7/8 in. photograph on trimmed paper mount (few small chips to edges of print). Gordon was a prominent leader of the 1876 Sioux Campaign. Subjects include William Daley, vice-president, Rawlins National Bank, "who raised the first flag-pole and flag in Wyoming, 1866"; General H.B. Freeman, first recruit of the 18th US Infantry in 1861; General Carrington; Jack Owen; Mrs. Carrington, former widow of Lieut. Grummond, "victim of the battle"; Mrs. and Mr. Stawn; Dennis Driscoll; Frank Gordon; William Murphy; John Newcomer; Sergeant Samuel Gibson; and S.S. Peters. HDS lists a Second Lieutenant George Washington Grummond, of Michigan, who was commissioned into the 18th US Infantry in May of 1866 and was killed on 21 December 1866 at Fort Phil Kearny, Dakota Territory. -- Photograph of officers in the field, modern penciled notation on verso identifying the regiment as the "14th Inf." 6 x 4 1/2 in. photograph on 7 x 5 in. mount.
