MRS. LINCOLN AND HER HUSBAND'S PORTRAIT.

In full: "In the midst of my overwhelming distress, the kind promise you several times made me in regard to my beloved husband's portrait returned to my remembrance. Will you not send us one quite as accurate, as in the 'Emancipation Proclamation'? More, we could not ask or expect - As one whom my lamented husband so highly respected, we will always hope to see you, should you visit Chicago. I have always felt great pride in the success of your great painting. Bowed down with such intense sorrow, think of what inestimable value a portrait from your unerring skill would be prized by myself and my Boys. Please, present my regards to Mrs. Carpenter - and be assured of my sincere esteem."

Francis Bicknell Carpenter was an American painter best known for First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation of President Lincoln, which was completed in 1864 following a six-month stay at the White House during which time he made detailed studies of each person at the original reading, as well as the room in which the Proclamation was first read. On 12 July 1864, Lincoln led his cabinet into the State Dining Room for the unveiling of the finished work. Of the painting, Lincoln would say to Carpenter, “I feel that there is more of me in this portrait than in any representation ever made.”

Following Lincoln's death, Carpenter lobbied to have Congress purchase the painting; however, Congress refused to appropriate the funds, and the painting remained in Carpenter's possession until 1877, when it was purchased by Elizabeth Thompson for $25,000 and then donated. Today, the painting hangs in the United States Capitol.
