Lot Note:

Robert Baribeau is an American painter whose work brings together the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism with collage, found materials, and richly layered pigment. Since the 1970s, he has developed a practice centered on the physicality of the painted surface, balancing spontaneous gesture with accumulated layers of material.

Baribeau maintained a longstanding relationship with New York’s Allan Stone Gallery, which presented numerous solo exhibitions of his work between 1980 and 2008. Executed in 2004, Untitled (000511) belongs to Baribeau’s established series of paintings on cigar boxes, in which a familiar commercial object becomes both pictorial surface and three-dimensional support. Despite its intimate scale, the work possesses a remarkable physical presence, concentrating Baribeau’s characteristic interplay of structure and improvisation into a densely layered, tactile object.

Scattered surface soiling and dust accumulation present. Corners of the plastic face are lifting slightly - most noticeably the bottom left corner, top right corner and along extreme left edge. Some craquelure and associated paint loss scattered throughout - however, this appears likely inherent to process and medium. Additional images available upon request.
