Lot Note:

Roger Toulouse was a French painter, sculptor, illustrator, poet, and educator whose highly individual practices developed between the movements of expressionist figuration and abstraction.  

Toulouse began working extensively in sculpture around 1970, making Figure representative of a pivotal period in his career. By the middle of the decade, this sculptural experimentation had also led to commissions for monumental public works in the Loiret region. 

His earliest sculptures translated his angular, “triangulated” drawings into three-dimensional forms through cut, hammered, and welded sheets of metal. Positioned between legible figuration and abstraction, the work exemplifies Toulouse’s ability to transform rigid metal into something animated, precarious, and psychologically charged.
