Lot Note:

Bruce Stillman began his artistic career as a teenager and was supporting himself through sales of his work by the age of eighteen. Early national attention brought comparisons with Alexander Calder, though Stillman developed a distinctive sculptural vocabulary of fabricated metal, carefully calibrated balance, and the interplay of movement, gravity, light, and shadow.

Rising more than five feet in height, Untitled is composed of broad, sweeping curves that fold inward and around one another, creating a form that appears at once mechanical and organic. The sculpture seems to coil, rotate, and expand, its continuous movement engaging the space around it and creating what Stillman has described as the “additional dimension” of sculpture.

Both substantial and visually weightless, the work exemplifies Stillman’s ability to imbue industrial materials with rhythmic energy and a palpable sense of suspension. Through its carefully balanced forms, Untitled captures the tension between gravity and movement that is central to Stillman’s sculptural practice.
