Exhibited:
Andover, Addison Gallery of American Art, Philips Academy, Frank Stella: From Start to Finish, October 1982
Lot Note:
Stella’s Exotic Birds series is a particular compositional feat by the artist. Also produced in tandem with a corresponding print series, after originally drafting compositions on graph-paper, Foamcore maquettes were produced, from which large-scale aluminum sculptures were formed. Each of the series reflects a different bird and is differentiated by separate colors and characteristics as well as an emphasis on form, relying on carefully modulated, worked-up architectural curves to define the structure in space and then enhanced with enamel, glitter, and gravel.
