According to Mr. Grey’s recollection, these lederhosen were worn during one of the productions of Cabaret. The story’s setting of Weimar-era Berlin informs the costume designer’s choice in outfitting the Emcee in these suede breeches; not only in reinforcing the locality of The Kit Kat Klub, but also in creating a rich sense of irony. The Emcee’s usual outfit of full-dress tails being intermingled with these lederhosen sparks a dissonance between the traditional Germanic costume with fashionable Weimar decadence, and also highlights how his cabaret acts mimic & mock what was occurring in Germany at that time.
Condition:
The overall condition is consistent with wear given the garment's use and vintage nature. Heavy discoloration and signs of wear throughout suede exterior; particularly concentrated at the back with various scuff marks and residue marks. Discoloration/light tarnishing to metal buttons at front. General stiffening throughout suede shorts and leather straps; slight curling to leather strap ends. Red-colored discoloration throughout interior.
