Stroud held the position of Court of Philadelphia Judge for many years. He is best remembered for his 1827 groundbreaking book documenting the laws of slave states, A Sketch of the Laws Relating to Slavery in Several States of the United States of America. The book was a key reference for Harriet Beecher Stowe while writing Uncle Tom's Cabin.
