Johnson was a noted Corporate lawyer and art collector. He represented Standard Oil Corporation, The Sugar Trust, The American Tobacco Company, The Northern Securities Company and was counsel to numerous railroad, mining, metal and distillery companies. He argued before the U.S. Supreme Court 168 times. The firm he established in 1863 continues as Saul Ewing. Johnson built one of the finest art collections in the United States of his time, which he willed to the City of Philadelphia and is now at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
