Property from a Private Collection, gifted by John Mullanphy Harney (1923-2014), St. Louis, Missouri.

John Mullanphy Harney was a respected connoisseur and dealer whose lifelong engagement with the arts shaped the cultural fabric of St. Louis. Born to Frank LaMotte and Charlotte Warfield Harney, and great-grandson of General William Selby Harney, he was educated at St. Louis Country Day School before earning his degree from Princeton University. He went on to pursue graduate studies in art history at Harvard University’s Fogg Museum.

During World War II, Harney served with distinction in the United States Navy. Following his service, he entered the family business, The Warfield Shop, established in 1912 by his grandmother, Florence M. Warfield. Under his stewardship, the firm—later known as Warfield’s Inc.—became a leading destination for antiques and fine decoration in St. Louis, admired for its discerning eye and refined taste.

Avidly curious and intellectually engaged, Harney was widely traveled and deeply read, with a breadth of knowledge spanning art, literature, and world cultures. His legacy endures not only through the prominence of Warfield’s in the city’s cultural history but also through his lifelong commitment to the arts.
