Lot Note:
The present portrait depicts June Oppen Degnan, as photographed by Man Ray in his studio in Paris. The work is accompanied by an original letter signed by Mrs. Degnan, certifying the authenticity of the portrait and affirming that Man Ray himself took the picture in 1951. The golden and glittery technique employed here was a rare artistic process: according to Degnan, it was used by Man Ray only once more.
In overall good condition. The photograph is stabilized by transparent mounting strips at each corner and laid down to a thick cardboard, itself encased within the mat at center, via a single strip of white linen tape running along the verso of the top outer edge of the board. With remnants of old paper tape along the outer edges of the same board as seen verso. The silver photograph presents well, with a lovely golden shine depending on the lighting. Additional images available upon request.
